Claude Monet (1840-1926) is one of the most famous artists that ever lived. As a young man he rebelled against the traditional painting methods of his day. Monet wanted to paint pictures that captured the mood of his surroundings. He was interested in the effects that light had on his subject at different times of the day, or in different seasons.

Other young artists shared his ideas. Together they became known as the Impressionists.
Monet’s main interest was always outdoor scenes. He found that to reproduce the mood and light of a sunny day he had to work quickly. The fashionable paintings of the day were quite different; they were almost always painted indoors and were usually carefully painted scenes from history. Compared to these, Monet's work seemed hurried and unfinished.

Monet's technique included the use of small rapid brushstrokes of different colors placed close to each other to give the impression of shimmering light. Monet perfected this technique at his garden in Germany, France.

Sunflowers by Van Gogh Hand Painted Oil Painting

Although a prolific artist, Vincent van Gogh is most often remembered for his Sunflower paintings. The first Sunflowers, painted in Paris during the summer of 1887, used dark colors and featured only 1 or 2 blossoms each. However, van Gogh continued to experiment with the Sunflower, and in August 1888, while waiting in Arles for his friend, Paul Gauguin, van Gogh painted at least 4 brilliantly colored Sunflower paintings, using riotous yellows, oranges and reds. Gauguin admired the colorful Sunflower series so much, that two of the paintings hung in his bedroom. It was at the end of this visit to the South of France that van Gogh descended into madness, ultimately severing his own ear. This hand-painted wrap-around oil painting has been reproduced from the original Sunflowers painting in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It is unclear whether this painting was completed in Arles in 1888, or the following year, when another "Still Life: Vase with Twelve Sunflowers" painting is noted. Despite the year, Sunflowers bursts with the vibrant energy of Vincent van Gogh, and has become a timeless masterpiece for which he will always be remembered.
